Once in a while you encounter a truly outstanding beer, like Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA. This has pretty much everything I want in the style: great taste, amazing drinkability, affordably priced and available in a can. It’s a great substitute for Heady Topper.
Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA: Appearance
Mostly clear shade of orange/dark gold. Pours to a fluffy, white head which retains and laces very well.
Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA: Smell
Pungent hop aromatics, slightly spicy, but also juicy and citrusy. Seems just a tad bit mild, though.
Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA: Taste
I’ve always detected a bit of a garlic and/or onion flavor to some of the more prominent New England-style Double IPAs, but this is the first I’ve seen to specifically mention using Summit hops – a variety that is known for that spicy flavor. Not that it’s the only taste, of course. Earthy/piney hop flavor is also prominent, especially on the back end. There’s citrusy fruit concentrate in the beginning as well. I’m impressed at how well these flavors complement each other and work on their own. The malty side is a bit direct, creating for just minor honey sweetness. It’s bitter to be sure, but not too intense; just a minor drying sensation. Not a starter DIPA – this is one for the veteran drinkers.
Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA: Drinkability
One of the signs of a great beer is when you take your first taste and you can’t put it down. That’s what happened when I initially sipped Two Roads Road 2 Ruin Double IPA. The mouthfeel was just so comfortable with a smooth texture and easy finish. It was actually pretty refreshing while on my tongue, too. At 8% ABV there is some noticeable alcohol warmth, but it’s quite gentle and doesn’t distract from the palette. It’s not overwhelming, either. I drank this so quickly I really want to open another one immediately.
